AFTERNOON AT THE MOVIES — Subotnick: Portrait of an Electronic Music Pioneer

Our October 3 programming is centered around contextualizing Buchla's place within the cultural milieu of 1960s/1970s San Francisco. This film screening makes a perfect lead-up to Ted Gordon's lecture/performance in the evening, but the film can also be attended on its own. Join us at 3:30pm for a screening SUBOTNICK: Portrait of an Electronic Music Pioneer, a 2022 documentary from Waveshaper Media. This film explores the life of electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick, a key figure in San Francisco's 1960s avant-garde music scene. 

The Buchla exhibit will be open for viewing before and after the screening. Due to the shortened exhibit hours, the EEG module will not be demonstrated. 

NOTE: The building will close at 5pm and reopen at 7:30 for the evening lecture and performance (please register for tickets separately HERE). We are happy to provide recommendations for area restaurants for dinner!

3:30 pm SUBOTNICK: Portrait of an Electronic Music Pioneer

This film explores the life of electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick. At 90 years of age, he has become a cult figure for a whole new generation that have come to recognize him as “The Father of Techno”. Featuring live performances captured in surround sound and augmented with innovative liquid-light psychedelic effects, Subotnick is a multimedia experience that highlights and celebrates one of the world’s most influential living composers.

ABOUT WAVESHAPER MEDIA

Waveshaper Media is a film and television production company based in Toronto dedicated to preserving electronic music history. Formed in 2011 when director Robert Fantinatto and producer Jason Amm got together to produce the 2014 indie-film hit I Dream of Wires, the company since completed two new feature length documentaries: Subotnick: Portrait of an American Music Pioneer in 2022 and Electronic Voyager: Bob Moog's Strange Sonic Journey in 2023. Waveshaper also produces an ongoing web series and a specialized music label.
